Community Energy

What is community energy?

“Community energy” or “Collective Self Consumption” refers to projects where citizens own or participate in the production and/or use of sustainable energy such as solar photovoltaic, wind turbines or hydroelectric generation.

The concept is based on the fact that within a community, not all buildings have space to receive renewable energy systems or not all building owners can afford to own an entire system.

The second key advantage is that when a building produces energy that is not immediately consumed, this energy can be transferred, through the grid, to another building at a very attractive price for both parties.

For instance, a school that has a large number of solar panels will not consume the electricity produced during school holidays, especially in summer. The solar electricity can therefore be transferred to another building of the solar community rather than being sold to the grid at a low rate.

Advantages of sharing electricity via the public grid

  1. Build a community where renewable energy is shared

  2. All different members of the community enjoy renewable energy even if they can’t afford to own a system on their own or don’t have space for one

  3. Reduce energy prices for the whole community
